For almost two years data from Arran has been submitted to Bird Atlas.
All sightings sent to me as the local recorder have been included.

 

What species have been seen where?

Which areas of Arran have been well covered?

Which species are “missing” from what areas?

 

How can I find out more about my local area on Arran?

 

Follow these stages,

 

  1. For the area in Arran that you are interested in, get the Bird Atlas Tetrad Code from the tables in the APPENDIX.

 

  1. Go to the Bird Atlas website  http://www.bto.org/birdatlas/

 

  1. Log in. It is easy to register.

 

  1. On the “Bird Atlas Data Home” page there is a table “Your Atlas Options”. In the table double click on “Any Square Summary”.

 

  1. On the “Any Square Summary” page enter the Bird Atlas Tetrad Code for the area that you are interested in. Choose “winter” or “breeding” and click “GO”.  Please note for obvious reasons some rare species are not shown.

 

What next?

 

As people interested in the birds on Arran have a good look at these lists in Any Square Summary and using your local knowledge see what species may not yet have been recorded. These may be common species that have been missed. Have any key habitats not been visited?  Are there a chunk of woodland or moorland birds missing?  Are there nocturnal species missing?

 

Continue to get out there and enjoy your birding and please continue to send your sightings regularly to me.  These will go not only contribute to the National Bird Atlas but also, provided there is sufficient data, to a local bird atlas for Arran.
